2010-2011
The 8th Annual
Sponsored by:

Program & Theme:
Writes of Spring is a unique writing contest designed to support literacy and promote creative expression in young people. It is a collaborative effort among the Orlando Repertory Theatre, the graduate students in the UCF Theatre for Young Audiences MFA Program, and the young people from the metro Orlando community.
Process:
In a one-page short story, essay or poem, writers address a specific topic. This year's topic is:
"I step out/in the door and..."
Written submissions are reviewed by a panel of UCF graduate students and developed into a play script. The resulting production is then presented in the spring as a one act play at Orlando Repertory Theatre for viewing by the young participants, teachers, families, and the community.
Then & Now:
In the inaugural year of this program, about 20 entries were received and one play was developed and performed as a staged reading. In its 7th year, 572 entries were received!
With the increased entries, the celebration has expanded from one night, into a two-night event celebrating writing and creativity.
In the contest's first year, a single winner was rewarded. Due to the large number of entries received each year, 120 top entries will be recognized in four different age groups.
